Singapore launch of paperless aircraft cockpit software

SINGAPORE, November 12, 2002) An electronic version of the familiar bulky flight bags used by airline crew could achieve substantial cost savings and improved operational efficiencies for airlines. This could lead to savings of on average US$100,000 on operating costs per aircraft annually and greatly improve cockpit safety procedures.

Irish company, AMT (Aircraft Management Technologies), has launched the latest version of its electronic cockpit product at an industry seminar in Singapore, attended by major airlines and aircraft manufacturers.

The proprietary Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) software solution, Flightman™, developed by the Dublin based aviation software specialist, was unveiled at the one day industry seminar in Singapore organised by Astronautics Corporation of America.
Astronautics is the hardware supplier of a Pilot Information Display (PID) product, and the seminar follows on from similar workshops in the USA and Europe to focus on current developments in digital documents for cockpits.

AMT is a leading provider of open information system technology to automate and streamline operations within the aviation industry.
The company’s flagship product Flightman™ offers secure, wireless management of aircraft technical and operations data via XML technology and portable computing devices.
Flight and ground crew input operations and maintenance information, which is in turn, transmitted to the airline’s management information systems during the aircraft turnaround cycle.

* The Electronic Log Book and Fuel Management Module creates an electronic version of an airline’s existing paper logs, adaptable to the airline’s preferred format in workflows and forms. This module improves fuel management efficiency by digitally recording fuel uplift details, enabling onboard fuel calculations and conversions and aiding adherence to the airline’s Fuel Plan.

* The eTechlog™ Module is designed for efficient operation of the Maintenance function, including defect management, component level reporting, Minimum Equipment Lists (MEL) tracking and parts tracking.

* The Performance, Weight and Balance Module enables onboard performance, weight and balance calculations, remote airport data updates, Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) messaging service and manual NOTAM entry facility.

The Flightman™ platform is the first product to offer secure, wireless transmission of aircraft technical and operations data. It provides a technology platform that offers a complete solution to the paperless cockpit; covering business processes, technical documentation and vendor management. This allows pilots, cabin crew and ground engineers to more efficiently capture and utilize operational information.

AMT has successfully completed the first stage of implementation of the Flightman™ software platform with DHL’s airline subsidiary, European Air Transport, as a prelude to full deployment on its European fleet.

This implementation follows contracts with major international air cargo airline, Atlas Air, and Spanish-based charter carrier, Futura International Airways.

According to information from airlines and official industry sources the deployment of paperless cockpit solutions could lead to substantial cost savings, estimated on average US$100,000 a year per aircraft and inefficient paperwork is also dramatically reduced.

Bernard Hensey, CEO of AMT, commented: “A successful cockpit automated solution requires a detailed understanding of Flight Operations and Maintenance and an in-depth knowledge of the limitations of existing processes.

This new world of the automated cockpit is exciting and creative, requiring high calibre implementation, research and development resources to guarantee a quality application from initial design to final implementation.

AMT prides itself on the ingenuity of its rapidly expanding research and development organization, supported by strategic systems integration partners such as Fujitsu and IBM, to continuously deliver solutions, such as our latest product, Flightman™, which places AMT in the forefront of this niche aviation industry sector.”
