AMT believes it is important to participate in broad aviation industry research and development projects. This is reflected in our participation in the European Union Sixth Framework Programme.
HILAS (Human Integration into the Lifecycle of Aviation Systems) is a major Integrated Project partially funded by the European Union that comprises 40 partners and has an overall budget of €28m over four years.
The HILAS project deals with the issue of Human Factors in the aviation industry and the design of aircraft systems and procedures to better match the requirements of those operating and maintaining them.
AMT leads the Flight Operations Strand and is part of the Core Management Team for HILAS. The Flight Operations Strand has a budget of €7m over four years and comprises 14 partners. These partners are drawn principally from the Commercial Airline Industry in Europe (easyJet, SAS Braathens, Lufthansa, Iberia, EuroFly, Futura Airways, and Adria Airways) together with AMT's Flightman™ Partners, Rockwell Collins, and a number of major academic and research institutes: Trinity College Dublin, Avtech, JRC (Italy), Kite Solutions, Technical Institute of Stockholm, and La Laguna University.
In the initial stages, the work of the Flight Operations Strand will revolve around a number of Process Re-engineering Workshops carried out with the airline partners in the strand. This work will be based on the same framework as the Process Re-engineering Workshops carried out by AMT with a number of major global airlines in recent years and will feed into the work being carried on in the Lean Flight Initiative
As an output of the Process Re-engineering Workshops, new systems for airline operations information management will be proposed. It will be the responsibility of the research institutions to ensure that any new systems proposed will take account of and inform best practise in Human Factors in the aviation industry generally.
